🚨 I've let this site get extremely old-and-dusty over the last 9 years. Please don't rely on it: the information is out of date, and my opinions on how to evaluate risk have changed a lot since then.
I'm considering a relaunch of the site. If you'd like to hear from me if/when I do that:
Finding chocolate and cocoa
Updated: January 1, 2019
I haven't looked into cocoa / chocolate products, but here's a few resources if you'd like to investigate further:
An anonymous (but no doubt good-looking) benefactor sent me a useful spreadsheet comparing cocoa products (including carb content, fiber, organic status, and price-per-ounce).
LabDoor tested the 11 best-selling dark chocolate brands for arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. Fortunately my staple Lindt brand did pretty well.
ConsumerLab tested chocolate / cocoa products for cadmium, lead, and flavanol content.
As You Sow tested dozens of products to see if they exceeded California's Maximum Allowable Dose Level for cadmium and lead.
